Report of Regents Cultural Education Committee to The Board of Regents

Your Committee on Cultural Education Committee had its scheduled meeting on June 13, 2016. Regent Roger Tilles, Chair of the Cultural Education Committee, submitted the following written report. In attendance were committee members:Regent Tilles, Regent Cea, Regent Cottrell, Regent Chin, Regent Ouderkirk, and Regent Johnson. In addition to CE Committee Members, in attendance were: Chancellor Rosa, Vice Chancellor Brown, Regents Tallon, Cashin, Collins, Johnson, Mead, Hakanson, and Reyes as well as Commissioner Elia and Executive Deputy Commissioner Berlin.

Chair’s Remarks: Regent Tilles welcomed everyone and introduced Sara Fittizzi, Executive Director of the New York State Summer School of the Arts.  Ms. Fittizzi introduced Margaret Denithorne, Artistic Director of the School of Theater and Maureen Gallager, who was a student at the School of Theater in 2015.

CE (D) 1 Report on New York State Summer School of the Arts 2015 and 2016 sessions

The New York State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSSA) begins its 47th year mid-June, 2016.  The statewide summer school of the arts offers seven schools, each  is a month-long, residential program for high-school students.  The seven programs are hosted on four college campuses.  Ms. Fittizzi provided an overview of the program and showed a brief section of a video prepared by Mountain Lake, PBS about the program.  The video can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB-10gIj4do . Ms. Denithorne, reviewed the content of the program and the ways in which it prepares students for careers in the arts and other careers outside of the arts.  Ms. Gallager discussed the profound impact that her participation in the program has had on her.   In 2015 406 students to the program were accepted out of 1200 applicants.
