Should the Board of Regents approve the proposed reappointments to the State Professional Standards and Practices Board for Teaching?
Required by State regulation.
Proposed Handling
This question will come before the Board of Regents at its June 2009 meeting where it will be voted on and action taken.
Procedural History
Terms for members of the State Professional Standards and Practices Board for Teaching are set forth in Regents Rule 3.14. The Board of Regents appoints members to four-year terms, with the exception of the teacher education student member, who is appointed to a two-year term. Board co-chairs are appointed for two-year terms.
Background Information
The terms of six members on the Standards Board expire on June 30, 2009. Of the five members who are eligible for reappointment, four are seeking and are being recommended for reappointment to the Board, each for an additional four-year term. In addition, the two-year term of one of the co-chairs has expired. A member is being recommended to fill the vacant co-chair position.
The following members are recommended for reappointment: Catalina R. Fortino (teacher member), Rosemary B. Harrigan (teacher member), Susan W. Mittler (teacher member), and Stephen J. Uebbing (higher education member). Catalina R. Fortino (teacher member) is being recommended for appointment as co-chair.

Recommendation
It is recommended that the Board of Regents approve the following reappointments to the State Professional Standards and Practices Board for Teaching: Catalina R. Fortino (teacher member), Rosemary B. Harrigan (teacher member), Susan W. Mittler (teacher member), and Stephen J. Uebbing (higher education member) each be appointed to a four-year term beginning July 1, 2009 and ending June 30, 2013; and that Catalina R. Fortino (teacher member) be appointed to a two-year term as co-chair beginning July 1, 2009 and ending June 30, 2011.
Timetable for Implementation
Members’ terms will begin July 1, 2009.
