SUMMARY:

The State Professional Standards and Practices Board for Teaching has produced two posters that support the teaching profession. The first poster is designed to raise awareness within the profession and among the public regarding New York States new Code of Ethics for Educators. The second poster is designed to raise awareness about the importance of educators to our schools and communities. These posters grew out of Board initiatives to promote teaching and were developed in cooperation with staff of the Office of Teaching Initiatives.

Code of Ethics for Educators poster

Following the Standards Boards development of the New York State Code of Ethics for Educators, it began work on a plan to disseminate the Code as widely as possible. The poster is one element in the dissemination plan, which also includes: a mailing of the Code of Ethics for Educators to the field and major stakeholders, publication of the Code on the Office of Teaching Initiatives Web site and in the Standards Board brochure, and the insertion of the Code with every teaching certificate mailed by the Education Department.

Celebrate Teaching poster

The Standards Boards interest in promoting the teaching profession was the impetus for the development of the Celebrate Teaching poster. This poster provides concrete suggestions for ways school and community members can celebrate teaching and support educators. The Board intends that this initiative will complement teacher recruitment and retention efforts.

Both posters will be mailed to schools, teacher education institutions, professional organizations, parent teacher organizations, teacher centers, the media, business groups, and other stakeholders in education.

Members of the Standards Board will attend the meeting to present the posters and answer questions about these initiatives.
