Your P-12 Education Committee held its scheduled meeting on July 16, 2012. All members were present, except for Regents Rosa and Cashin, who were excused.
ACTION ITEMS
Charter Schools
VOTED: That the Board of Regents finds that the proposed charter schools: (1) meets the requirements set out in Article 56 of the Education Law, and all other applicable laws, rules and regulations; (2) will operate in an educationally and fiscally sound manner; (3) is likely to improve student learning and achievement and materially further the purposes set out in subdivision two of section twenty-eight hundred fifty of Article 56 of the Education Law; and (4) will have a significant educational benefit to the students expected to attend the charter school, and the Board of Regents therefore approves the charter of the Citizens of the World Charter School New York 1 as proposed by the Trustees of the State University of New York (SUNY) and issues a provisional charter to it for a term as prescribed by §2851(2)(p) of the Education Law. MOTION FOR ACTION BY FULL BOARD
Madam Chancellor and Colleagues: Your P-12 Education Committee recommends, and I move, that the Board of Regents act affirmatively upon each recommendation in the written report of the Committee's deliberations at its meeting on July 16, 2012, copies of which have been distributed to each Regent.
MATTERS NOT REQUIRING BOARD ACTION
Enrollment and Retention Targets – The Committee discussed the final proposed methodology as described in Attachment B to prescribe enrollment and retention targets for students with disabilities, English language learners, and students who are eligible applicants for the free and reduced price lunch program, pursuant to the May 2010 amendments to the New York State Charter Schools Act, specifically, Education Law §2851(4(e) and §2852(9-b). The Board of Regents will take action on this item in the full Board meeting. [P-12 (D)
Common Core and Social Studies Frameworks – The Committee was provided an update on the implementation of the Common Core standards, including discussion on vendors, Network Teams and AP STEM professional development. The draft Social Studies frameworks were also discussed, including the alignment of Social Studies with the Common Core. Due to time constraints, a more in-depth conversation on this topic will be brought back at the September Regents meeting.
