SUMMARY

Issue for Decision

Should the Regents issue the first renewal charter for the Urban Choice Charter School (Rochester)?

Background Information

The request to approve the renewal application of the Urban Choice Charter School (the “”School”) to the extent that it provides for instruction in grades kindergarten through eight was approved by the Board of Regents at its December 15, 2009 meeting, and the School was directed to modify its application accordingly.  Staff recommends that the renewal charter now be issued.

Recommendation

VOTED:  That the Board of Regents issues the first renewal charter of the Urban Choice Charter School and that its provisional charter be extended for a term up through and including June 30, 2014.

Reason for Recommendation

The charter school 1) meets the requirements set out in Article 56 of the Education Law, and all other applicable laws, rules, and regulations; (2) demonstrates the ability to operate the school in an educationally and fiscally sound manner; (3) is likely to improve student learning and achievement and materially further the purposes set out in subdivision two of section twenty-eight hundred fifty of Article 56 of the Education Law; and (4) will have a significant educational benefit to the students expected to attend the charter school,

Timetable for Implementation

The Regents action for the Urban Choice Charter School will become effective immediately.
