Issue for Decision

Will the Board of Regents approve my appointment of Kenneth G. Slentz to the position of Associate Commissioner, District Services Statewide?

Reasons for Consideration

Mr. Slentz has become a recognized leader in the Herkimer Fulton Hamilton Otsego BOCES in technological, financial and day-to-day operations of school districts.

Ken has sixteen years of experience in public and private P-12 education, most recently as the Superintendent of Schools in the West Canada Valley School District; a position he has held since 2004.  Before that, he was the Superintendent of Schools and K-12 Principal in the Long Lake School District where he had also worked as curriculum director, middle school teacher and teacher assistant.

During his time in administration, Mr. Slentz has overseen numerous building projects and has successfully passed eight budgets.  One of his greatest strengths has been his ability to build the capacity of his professional staff with minimal budgetary impact.  In the West Canada Valley School District he instituted an instructional effectiveness model with “experts teaching experts” and a comprehensive professional development plan.   Further, Mr. Slentz's direct experience in building the capacity of the central NY region in technology integration and preparation for online learning has helped ready the region's districts for cost saving and opportunity building in the years ahead.

 Proposed Handling

The Board of Regents will review Mr. Slentz’s credentials and experience in Executive Session on January 11, 2010.

Recommendation

I recommend that you take the following action:

VOTED, that the Board of Regents approve the appointment of Kenneth G. Slentz  to the position of Associate Commissioner, District Services Statewide  effective January 12, 2010.                  .
