SUMMARY

Issue for Discussion

How can the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries (RAC) and the Regents collaborate effectively to position library initiatives for success in the future?

  •

Proposed Handling

Regents Advisory Council members will present the Council's policy recommendations for 2010. After the presentation, the Cultural Education Committee will have the opportunity to question Council members and discuss their recommendations in detail.

Procedural History

The Regents Advisory Council on Libraries, the oldest continuing Regents advisory council, advises the Board on issues concerning library policy, works with the State Education Department staff in developing a comprehensive statewide library and information policy, and makes recommendations to the Regents for implementing library programs and initiatives.

Background Information

Each year, RAC members report directly to the Regents on their activities, concerns, and recommendations. Members include community leaders and library leaders who study and review the library services provided in New York State, discuss options with elected officials, and engage the Regents in establishing priorities. A list of the Council members is attached.

  •

Recommendation

Staff recommend that the Regents accept the recommendations of the Regents Advisory Council and work with its members to implement their recommendations as circumstances permit.

Timetable for Implementation

Implementation should begin immediately as a basis for the 2011-2012 budget and legislative priorities.
