Proposed Handling

The question will come before the full Board at its September 2009 meeting where it will be voted on and action taken.

Procedural History

In May 2009, Bryant and Stratton College submitted proposals to convert existing programs leading to Associate in Occupational Studies (A.O.S.) degrees to programs leading to Associate in Applied Sciences (A.A.S.) degrees.  These programs are:

  • Accounting
  • Administrative Assistant
  • Business
  • Criminal Justice (Albany, Buffalo, Henrietta, Southtowns, Syracuse and online only)
  • Graphic Design (Amherst, Henrietta and Syracuse North locations only)
  • Human Resources Specialist
  • Interactive Media Design (Amherst, Henrietta, Southtowns and Syracuse North locations only)
  • Medical Administrative Assistant
  • Medical Assisting (Albany, Buffalo, Greece, Henrietta, Southtowns, Syracuse and Syracuse North locations only)
  • Network Security
  • Network Technology
  • Paralegal Studies (Albany, Amherst, Henrietta and online only)
  • Restaurant and Hotel Management (Southtowns, Syracuse and online only)
  • Travel and Tourism Management (Southtowns, Syracuse and online only)

The Department has determined that the programs meet registration standards.  These would be the College’s first A.A.S. programs.

Background Information

Bryant and Stratton College was founded in Buffalo in 1854.  Currently, the college has locations in New York, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.  The New York State locations include Albany, Buffalo (with branch campuses in Amherst and Lackawanna/Southtowns), Rochester (with a branch campus in Henrietta), and Syracuse (with a branch campus in Liverpool/Syracuse North).  The College’s online programs are registered through the Southtowns campus.

Bryant and Stratton College is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.  The College is authorized to confer the Associate in Occupational Studies (A.O.S.) degree at all New York State locations, and the Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree at the Buffalo, Amherst, and Southtowns locations.

Recommendation

It is recommended that the Board of Regents authorize Bryant and Stratton to award the Associate in Applied Sciences (A.A.S.) degree.

Timetable for Implementation

If the Board of Regents authorizes Bryant and Stratton College to award the Associate in Applied Sciences (A.A.S.) degree, the Department will register the proposed programs and the College will proceed to recruit and enroll students.
