SUMMARY

Issue for Discussion

Discussion of proposed visit to the ship this summer.

Procedural History

The State Museum in conjunction with other state and federal agencies rescued the historic canal motorship in 2005.  As a centerpiece of the 2009 Quadricentennial, it will travel along the Hudson River, Champlain Canal and Lake Champlain with exhibitions and programs in cooperation with the Erie Canalway National Historic Corridor.

Background Information

The 1921 Day Peckinpaugh is on the National Register of Historic Places.  Its significance comes from being the first vessel specifically designed for the early twentieth-century Erie Barge Canal.  It was in continuous service on the waterway until 1994, being the last regularly scheduled commercial hauler on the State's canal system.

Recommendation

Visit the ship this summer.  Discuss long term operational responsibilities.
