Should the Board of Regents approve the appointment of Karen Fontana and Louise S. Glasso to the New York State School for the Deaf Board of Visitors?

 

Proposed Handling

 

              The request to appoint Ms. Fontana and Ms. Glasso will come before the Full Board at its May 2009 meeting for approval.

 

Procedural History

 

Each year, as vacancies occur, the Board of Regents approves recommendations to fill such vacancies.

Background Information

 

              Section 4353 of Education Law requires the Board of Regents to appoint an Advisory Board of Visitors of the New York State School for the Deaf in Rome, NY.

 

 

 

 

 

Recommendation

 

That the following individuals be appointed to fill vacancies on the New York State School for the Deaf Board of Visitors:  Karen Fontana and Louise S. Glasso both  be appointed to serve a six-year term ending June 30, 2015.  Information on the proposed appointees is noted on Attachment 1.

 

Timetable for Implementation

 

              If the Regents approve the recommended candidates, appointments will be made in June 2009.

  • Ed.D. Degree in Child  and Youth Studies with Specialization in Special Education
  • M.S. Degree as a Reading Instructor
  • B.S. Degree in Special Education and N-6
  • Published article in “Journal of At-Risk Issues”, Summer of 2005
  • Presenter at the National Middle School Association’s Conference (2003)
  • Authored a parent training homework handbook for Rome City School District
  • Adjunct Instructor for Elmira College and Mohawk Valley Community College

 

Ms. Fontana would replace Donald Starks, who stepped down in June of 2008.  Ms. Fontana has been attending meetings this 2008-2009 School year as a visitor and as a guest.
