SUMMARY:
The Board of Regents is authorized to approve proposed revisions to existing charters. The Board of Trustees of the State University of New York has submitted to the Board of Regents proposed revisions to the charters for the Harlem Day Charter School and the Stepping Stone Academy Charter School. The proposed revision for the Harlem Day Charter School is to modify its extended year program to focus solely on students the school has identified as at-risk. Originally the extended year program had mandated the enrollment of all students in the charter school for a four-week period in July. The school believes that its extended day program has erased the need for all students to participate in the four-week extended year program and desires to focus its resources more effectively on its at-risk students. The proposed revision for the Stepping Stone Academy Charter School is to make a permanent reduction in its projected enrollment. The change would reduce student enrollment for 2003-04 from 800 to 550. It would reduce enrollment from 900 to 700 and from 900 to 800 in 2004-05 and 2005-06, respectively. The reductions in enrollment are necessitated because of the limitations of the schools facility and the renovation plans for the facility. Attached are copies of materials submitted by the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York.
- VOTED: That the Board of Regents approve the proposed revisions to the charters of the following charter schools based upon the information contained in the attachments and upon a finding by the Board of Regents that: (1) the revisions meet the requirements set out in Article 56 of the Education Law, and all other applicable laws, rules, and regulations; (2) the revisions (together with the other terms of the charters) will permit the charter schools to operate in an educationally and fiscally sound manner; and (3) the revisions (together with the other terms of the charters) are likely to improve student learning and achievement and materially further the purposes set out in subdivision two of section twenty-eight hundred fifty of Article 56 of the Education Law:
- Harlem Day Charter School
- Stepping Stone Academy Charter School
On July 17, 2003, the Regents approved a revision to the existing charter of the Riverhead Charter School. The Board must now enter into a revised charter agreement reflecting this revision. The proposed revised agreement is attached hereto.
VOTED: That the Board of Regents approve the revised charter agreement for the following charter school:
- Riverhead Charter School
