SUMMARY:

 

Terms for members of the State Professional Standards and Practices Board for Teaching are set forth in Regents Rule 3.14. Members serve four-year, staggered terms. The expiration of terms of four members not seeking reappointment and four additional resignations from the Board have created eight vacancies in the categories of Educator (teacher, higher education, and school administrator), Public and Teacher Education Student. The following individuals are recommended for appointment to the vacant positions: Eric R. Gidseg (teacher member), Adam D. Kinory (teacher member), Kathleen M.  Taylor (teacher member), Stephanie F. Leeds (higher education member), Sally A. Thompson (school administrator member), Anne Marie Tryjankowski (public member), and Chelsea Lynn Caraco (teacher education student member).

 

One vacancy remains in the public member category which we expect to fill as soon as possible.  Short biographies of the nominees and a list of current Board members are attached.

 

VOTED: That Eric R. Gidseg (teacher member), Kathleen M. Taylor (teacher member), Chelsea Lynn Caraco (teacher education student member), and Anne Marie Tryjankowski (public member) be appointed to terms beginning September 1, 2004 and ending June 30, 2008; that Stephanie F. Leeds (higher education member) be appointed to an unexpired term beginning September 1, 2004 and ending June 30, 2007; that Adam D. Kinory (teacher member) be appointed to an unexpired term beginning September 1, 2004 and ending June 30, 2006; and that Sally A. Thompson (school administrator member) be appointed to an unexpired term beginning September 1, 2004 and ending June 30, 2005.

Eric R. Gidseg                                               Membership Category: Educator

Poughkeepsie, New York

 

Eric Gidseg has taught kindergarten and first grade in the Arlington Central School District for the past fifteen years. He also serves as the school’s Webmaster. Prior to this, Mr. Gidseg founded, directed, and taught kindergarten at the Mountain Laurel School in New Paltz, from 1983-1989. He began his career in 1978 teaching kindergarten at the Rudolph Steiner School in New York City.

 

Mr. Gidseg has received various grants, including the Richard Gazzola Teacher Fellowship Grant in 2003 for teachers pursuing advanced study in education. He is active in professional organizations, including the International Reading Association, National Kindergarten Association, Alliance for Childhood, and American Education Research Association.

 

Mr. Gidseg has a B.A. in Secondary Education/English and an M.S. in Early Childhood Education from State University of New York College at New Paltz and is enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Educational Theory and Practice at State University of New York at Albany.

 

 

Adam D. Kinory                                              Membership Category: Educator

Adam D. Kinory has taught at the School of the Future in New York City’s Community School District #2 for the past ten years, teaching both math and, most recently, humanities, at the high school level. In 2001, Mr. Kinory achieved certification in Adolescent and Young Adult English Language Arts from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

 

Mr. Kinory’s professional activities include serving as an instructor in the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Effective Teaching Program, on a Test Review Committee in English for the State Education Department, and as a member of a Content Advisory Committee for the State Teacher Certification Examination Program. This past year he participated in the Digital Edge Project, a joint project in technology integration between NBPTS and Apple Computers. In 2003-2004, Mr. Kinory was named an Apple Distinguished Educator, and was selected to mentor teacher colleagues in curricular technology integration.

 

Mr. Kinory has a B.A. in English Literature from State University of New York at Albany, and an M.A. in English Education and an M.S. in Educational Administration from City College of the City University of New York.

 

 

Stephanie F. Leeds                                        Membership Category: Educator

Stephanie Leeds has served as director of the Education and Child Studies Program at Cazenovia College for the past five years, and has taught at Cazenovia since 1992. Previously, Dr. Leeds was an elementary vice principal in the Syracuse City School District for four years. She also served as director of the Syracuse University Cooperative Laboratory Nursery School from 1979-1988. 

 

Dr. Leeds received Cazenovia’s Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award in 2003 and the Friend of Children Award in 2001 from the Syracuse Association for the Education of Young Children and the Child Care Council of Onondaga County. She served as a delegate to the China-United States Joint Conference on Early Childhood Education held in Beijing, China, in 1993. Dr. Leeds has been an accreditation site visitor and validator for the National Association for the Education of Young Children since 1985, and is a charter and active member of the New York Task Force on Quality Inclusive Schooling, in conjunction with the Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) and the Systems Change Project at Syracuse University.

 

Dr. Leeds has a B.A. in Philosophy from Le Moyne College, and a Ph.D. in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Syracuse University, and completed post-doctoral work in Educational Administration at Syracuse University.

 

 

Kathleen M. Taylor                                        Membership Category: Educator

Kathleen Taylor has taught cosmetology at the Ulster County Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) Career & Technical Center for the past ten years. She is an active member of the High Schools that Work Program at the BOCES. Her previous experience includes teaching cosmetology services and GED classes at the Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES for three years. Ms. Taylor has been a licensed cosmetologist for over thirty years.

 

Ms. Taylor served on Ulster BOCES shared decision-making team for five years, three as chair.  She is vice president of the local NYSUT chapter. She is a member of the Association for Career & Technical Education, National Cosmetology Association, the American Cancer Society’s Look Better, Feel Better Program, the AFL-CIO Central Labor Council’s Political Labor Committee, and the Skills USA program. She is also active in the community, participating in voter registration drives, AIDS awareness, and a breast cancer awareness program at Kingston Hospital.

 

Ms. Taylor has a B.S. in Vocational Technical Education from State University of New York College at Oswego, an M.P.S. and graduate study in special education from SUNY College at New Paltz.

 

 

Sally A. Thompson                               Membership Category: Educator

Sally Thompson has been principal of the Jackson Annex Elementary School in the Hempstead Union Free School District for the past two and a half years. Her twenty-year service in the district has also included principal positions at two other schools and three years service as director of research, planning, and evaluation. Ms. Thompson has prior administrative experience in schools in Amityville and in New Britain, Connecticut, and served as a school principal for the Connecticut Department of Children and Youth Services in Hartford, Connecticut. She has administrative and teaching experience in the New York City Schools and began her thirty-seven year career in education as a teacher of English, drama and music in Brooklyn.

 

Ms. Thompson is active in the National Association of Elementary School Principals, New York University Roundtable, the National Alliance of Black School Educators, and other professional organizations. She serves as a member of the Panel of Experts with Harcourt Educational Measurement as an advisor in the creation of the projected National Education Assessment. Ms. Thompson received the Educator of the Year award from the National Council of Negro Women in 1999 and was named Educator of the Year by the NAACP.

 

Ms. Thompson holds a B.S. in Speech Education from Emerson College, an M.A. in Guidance and Counseling from Long Island University, and a Professional Diploma in Organizational Studies from New York University. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Educational Administration from Nova Southeastern University.

 

 

Anne Marie Tryjankowski                     Membership Category: Public

Anne Marie Tryjankowski serves as managing director of Education Innovation Consortium, providing educational consulting services to urban school districts. Previously, Ms. Tryjankowski held administrative positions in the Buffalo City School District for six years, including serving as supervisor of technology integration and student evaluation, and coordinator for parent involvement. She began her career in education as an elementary education teacher, serving six years in the Buffalo public and diocesan schools.

 

Ms. Tryjankowski is a member of the Buffalo area United Way’s Success by Six Program, serving on its higher education committee. She also is an adjunct professor at Canisius College and State University of New York at Buffalo, teaching in the areas of early childhood education and technology integration in education.

 

Ms. Tryjankowski has a B.S. in psychology and an M.S. in Education from Canisius College, and is pursuing a doctoral degree in Learning and Instruction at State University of New York at Buffalo.

 

 

Chelsea Lynn Caraco                Membership Category:  Teacher Education Student

Chelsea Lynn Caraco is currently a junior in the School of Education, College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York.  She is a childhood education major with a concentration in mathematics.  Ms. Caraco holds a Regents diploma from Mayfield High School and was an early admissions candidate to the Fulton-Montgomery Community College taking high school courses during the day and college courses at night in her senior year of high school.  Ms. Caraco serves as President of the College of Saint Rose’s Chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters and started a weekly volunteer program at the Sheridan Avenue Headstart in Arbor Hill in the Capital District. She has also worked as a substitute teacher for the Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES.  Ms. Caraco is highly recommended for membership on the State Professional Standards and Practices Board by Crystal Gips, Dean of the School of Education of the College of Saint Rose.
