SUMMARY

Issue for Decision

Should the Board of Regents approve the appointment of Kimberley M. McLean to fill a vacancy on the Interim Board of Education of the Roosevelt Union Free School District as recommended by the Regents interview panel?

Reason(s) for Consideration

Required by State statute, Chapter 33 of the Laws 2002.

Proposed Handling

The question will come before the P–12 Education Committee on August 9, 2010 for action.

Background Information

Under Chapter 33 of the Laws of 2002, the Board of the Regents appointed members to the Interim Board of Education of the Roosevelt Union Free School District.  If any vacancy occurs in these appointed positions, the Board of Regents is authorized to appoint a new member to the Interim Board.  As of July 1, 2011, all members of the Board of Education of the Roosevelt Union Free School District will be elected members.

Regents’ appointee Heather Palmore has resigned from the Interim Board of Education of the Roosevelt Union Free School District.  A public announcement of the vacancy was posted and four applicants applied for the position.  A Board of Regents interview panel, composed of Regents Tillles, Rosa and Young conducted interviews of candidates and recommended Kimberley M. McLean to serve the remainder of Ms. Palmore’s term, making Ms. McLean the sole appointee of the Board of Regents on the Interim Board of Education.  Ms. McLean has a strong commitment to community service, including pro bono legal work.  She holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business from Hofstra University; a Master of Arts in Economics and Business from Brooklyn College; and a Juris Doctor from St. John’s University.

Recommendation

VOTED: That Kimberley M. McLean be appointed to fill a vacancy on the Interim Board of Education of the Roosevelt Union Free School District to serve the remainder of the unexpired term ending June 30, 2011.

Timetable for Implementation

This appointment is effective immediately.
