Goal 2

AUTHORIZATION(S):

SUMMARY

Issue for Decision (Consent Agenda)

Should the Regents authorize ASA Institute of Business and Computer Technology to confer the degree of Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.)?

Reason(s) for Consideration

 ASA Institute needs Regents authorization in order to award the A.A.S. degree.

Proposed Handling

The question will come before the Higher Education and Professional Practice Committee at its October 2005 meeting where it will be voted on and action taken.  It will then come before the Full Board at its October 2005 meeting for final action.

Procedural History

          ASA Institute of Business and Computer Technology, Brooklyn, seeks Regents authorization to award the degree of Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.).  Regents authorization is needed because ASA Institute is a proprietary college.

          The Regents authorized ASA Institute to award the Associate in Occupational Studies (A.O.S.) degree in November 1999.  Before that time, the institution had been approved by the Department as a registered postsecondary business school.  ASA Institute offers programs leading to the A.O.S. degree in the disciplinary fields of business, health professions, and physical sciences.

The Department has determined that the proposed curriculum meets the requirements of §3.47 of the Rules of the Board of Regents and the standards for registration set forth in the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education.

Background Information

ASA Institute has been strengthening the liberal arts component in all its degree programs.  The liberal arts component of its proposed program in Health Information Technology consists of 23 credits, 3 more than the 20 credits required for the A.A.S. degree.  Accordingly, the Institute seeks authority to confer the A.A.S. degree.

Recommendation

It is recommended that the Regents take the following action:

VOTED, that ASA Institute of Business and Computer Technology be authorized, effective October 7, 2005, to confer the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree on students successfully completing registered A.A.S. programs.
