Background Information

Under Chapter 33 of the Laws of 2002, the Board of Regents is responsible for appointing members to the Interim Board of Education of the Roosevelt Union Free School District when a vacancy occurs.  A total of five Board members must be appointed, at least three of whom must be residents of the district and no more than two of whom may be non-residents. Board members shall be appointed (and may be reappointed) for terms ranging from one to five years. The recent relocation of one member of the Interim Board of Education outside of the district now necessitates the appointment of a new Board member who resides in the Roosevelt School District.

Legal public notice of the vacancy and the application was posted by the Roosevelt District Clerk and was available on the Department’s website.  Chancellor Bennett appointed a Regents Subcommittee to interview applicants that included Vice Chancellor Sanford and Regents Tilles, Cortés-Vázquez and Cofield. Three candidates were interviewed on June 14, 2005 at the district office.

The Subcommittee recommends that the Full Board approve the appointment of Mr. Carl L. DeHaney, Jr.  Mr. DeHaney has been a resident of the Roosevelt School District for 38 years and currently has two children who are students in the district. He is Vice-President of the Harry Daniels Parent Teacher Association (PTA), a member of the PTA Council, and serves as a Trustee member for the Roosevelt Public Library.  At present, Mr. DeHaney is Chief Director of Intergovernmental Affairs and Community Outreach at the Nassau County Department of Social Services. In this position, he has contact with civic groups, churches, and other community-based organizations to inform them of services provided by the Department of Social Services. His previous employment experience includes Election Clerk, Nassau County Board of Elections; and General Manager, Roosevelt Chamber of Commerce.  He is the author of a weekly editorial column focusing on issues of the African-American community.  Mr. DeHaney is also affiliated with the NAACP, the New York Association of Black Journalists, and the Black Writers Alliance.
