TITLE OF ITEM:

The City College of The City University of New York

DATE OF SUBMISSION:

October 21, 2004

PROPOSED HANDLING:

Approval (Consent Agenda)

RATIONALE FOR ITEM:

Regents authorization needed in order for the institution to confer a new degree

STRATEGIC GOAL:

Goal #2

AUTHORIZATION(S):

SUMMARY:

The City University of New York Board of Trustees has petitioned the Regents for authority to confer the Master of Landscape Architecture (M.L.A.) degree at The City College of New York. Subdivision (8) of Section 6206 of Education law states that the Trustees:

          …shall, on the recommendation of its faculty or faculties, grant the certificates, diplomas and degrees which were announced in the bulletins of the existing public institutions of higher learning published for the term beginning immediately prior to April sixteenth, nineteen hundred twenty-six, and also such other degrees and honors as the regents thereafter specifically authorized or may hereafter authorize it to grant.

           At The City College, the Trustees now award eight types of master's degrees. The College has requested registration of a licensure-qualifying Landscape Architecture program leading to the Master of Landscape Architecture degree. The institution now offers a registered Landscape Architecture program leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree, which is designated as fulfilling the education requirements for professional licensure and is fully accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB). The Office of the Professions has determined that the proposed M.L.A. program meets the standards for registration set forth in the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education.

Recommendation: I recommend that the Regents take the following action:

VOTED, that The City University of New York Trustees be authorized, effective November 5, 2004, to confer the degree of Master of Landscape Architecture (M.L.A.) on duly qualified students successfully completing registered programs at The City College of New York.
